If you do go down the win2k or winxp route make damn sure it's not connected to the internet. If you do connect it to the internet expect it to be compromised fairly quickly. -

You're going to want to open it up and apply better thermal paste between the CPU and the heatsink/heatpipes. It's almost certainly thermal throttling. You can verify by downloading and running hwinfo64 or similar and watch your temp and clock speeds while running the test.
