  1. I just use the generic fanuc 3 axis post. I'll fool around with it.
  2. so, where should i be looking now? post perhaps?
  3. X6 File I_GOT_A_FEVER_AND_THE_ONLY_PRESCRIPTION_IS_MORE_G03_MOVES.MCX-6
  4. Arcs only. There is no spline geometry being used to drive the toolpath. I've played around with the arc tolerances. Set to 1:1, 2:1, and 3:1, going as high as 0.100" total tolerance. Nothing helps. I still get almost entirely G01 moves. I have helix supported, but I'm not using any microlifts. I'm clearing away full depth of stock, so microlifts won't gain me anything as I'm returning over air anyways. This is definitely what I'm dealing with. The processor speed is insufficient for a scientific calculator, much less a high speed toolpath. I've played around with the arc filters for days. This may just be a dead horse... and my arms are getting tired...
  5. Set to 0.050" total. still getting mostly G01 moves
  6. i just tried leaving 0.050" on the stock, and giving the arc tolerance a total of 0.050", and it changed about half the moves to arcs. Hmm...
  7. this path is just a 2D highspeed peel mill. feed set to 40 ipm. i am only cutting air right now, as i'm trying to figure out how to make this machine perform better. it looks to me like that toolpath can be done with all arcs, but instead it's posting as G1 moves. i just need to bring the lines per second WAY down, and I'd like to raise my feed up. the only way i can accomplish this is by having mastercam post the moves as arcs.
  8. sorry. having issues posting... keeps timing out and creating new threads...
  9. Hi Guys, Been having some issues with high speed toolpaths for a while, and I'm curious if there's anything I can do... The mill I work with is old. (Fanuc 6M B controller) This hasn't stopped me from doing some really cool 3D surfacing. However, I've been trying to work with high speed machining and I'm having issues. Basically, my mill's controller can only handle so many lines of code per second, and the high speed toolpaths keep wanting to make tiny G1 moves. My machine will basically jerk over .001", then stop and wait for the next line of code, then jerk over another .001" and wait for the next line of code. These delays are only milliseconds, but they are very noticeable when it's happening 1000 times. I've played around with arc filter / tolerances, but i can't fix it. Any ideas? Do the highspeed toolpaths require these tiny moves? Here's my code: % O1500 (PROGRAM NAME) (DATE=DD-MM-YY - 27-06-13 TIME=HH:MM - 09:21) ( 3/8 FLAT ENDMILL TOOL - 1 DIA. 10. I'm looking at it now. Did you draw the fillets in the corners? They are all protruding out past the boundary surfaces. (i.e. your tangencies are not correct) Are you wanting it tangent? (smooth) also, are you wanting a fillet in each vertical(ish) corner, and along the bottom? (4 fillets, or 8 fillets) i can tell you this is definitely possible, it's just a question of how you go about it. sometimes when dealing with complex fillets in surfaces, i will skip the "fillet" function and draw my own geometry, then sweep a surface path as needed.
  11. Then I guess my followup question is, are there any complications with installing x7 on a machine that already has x6? Will x6 remain unchanged?
  12. Hey guys. I've been sucked into a series of odd production runs lately. Most have had short cycle times, so I haven't been able to leave my machine long enough to get anything else accomplished. (give me one offs any day...) Anyways, I have X7 in an unopened box on my desk and it's burning a whole in my brain. I want to install X7 and start playing working with it. I've noticed a lot of threads about bugs and crashes, which worries me. Is everyone suggesting the upgrade to X7? Is it worth the headaches? (We only have 3 axis) Currently the only bug in X6 that irritates me is weird results with transform toolpaths.
  13. i worked through this using rotary's method. my 3d contour kept gouging the part slightly. (probably .001") any idea why this would be? MCM, that toolpath is beautiful. I am going to work through your method next.
  14. The veteran toolmakers here at the shop say feed in/feed out. Some of what they say I follow like gospel, but I'm always trying to figure out if it's tradition, opinion, fact, or preference. I'm still learning the infinite depths of machining, and I'm always cautious about picking up bad habits from misinformation that might haunt me later. (For example, I've been shown three different ways, by three different toolmakers, how to use the cut-off wheel to cut ejector pins to size. I'm still trying to figure out which method is "the best". I've narrowed it down to the top two) I only care about fact. If it's not right, it's wrong... with very little room for a gray area. Would you still stop and rapid out using a spiral flute reamer? Would that flute geometry magnify these (possible) vertical retract marks? Wait... I thought everyone else ways saying they used G86 because G85 sometimes resulted is a looser tolerance? I'm misreading, or confused, or both... I am one of those noobies, which is why I'm trying to learn the benefits of each cycle. In my limited experience, there are always multiple ways to complete a specific task, but one method will always stand out as the "best" way to complete said specific task. My goal is to learn which method is the best in which situation. This is what it sounds like to me so far: G81 - Fastest, Poorest surface finish G85 - Slowest, Best surface finish (sometimes oversizes?) G86 - Fast, with good surface finish
  15. ^that's why. maybe it's not a big deal? does that work? seems like the hole would already be on size after feeding down, so feeding back up shouldn't matter? By that logic, if you feed too slowly you will oversize your hole?
  16. i always ream by using a drill cycle, then selecting a reamer tool. mastercam defaults to g85 bore cycle (feed in/feed out) when selecting a reamer tool. i've never had a problem with off-sized holes using this method. I've never used g86. what benefit does this offer? or perhaps, what application does it have? (I always thought stopping the spindle and G0-ing out was a no-no.)
  17. i work in the tool room of an injection molding company, so it's rare to have any sort of production run. i typically have to set new tools for every project. i think my 1/4" 90 deg mill/drill is the only tool that i never have to change. because everything i do is "one of", i set new tools every time in mastercam. i choose a tool from the default library, modify it to match the tool i'll use, then use G-Wizard to calculate my speeds/feeds based on each cut. i then go by ear to adjust speeds and feeds, but most of the time G-Wizard gets it right.
  18. i still need to get the educational version of Mcam. been swamped this week with finals, and dealing with lovely personal drama... I'll be cleared up after this weekend.
  19. i need to use this more. seems really cool. i'm so used to the older functionality i forget to try the new tools :/
  20. Relative Position ribbon bar that's the name of the shift+click function in case you want to read up on it's functionality in the help file.
  21. shift+click will let you enter polar coordinates as well
  22. there are a few ways to do it. 1) when you're in xform, just enter in the distance you want to move in the x/y/z box. those boxes are incremental coordinates. (you can also move in incremental polar coordinates while in xform) or 2) select your first point, then shift+select your next point. this will bring up a box to let you enter incremental coordinates from the selected point. not sure if you can enter incremental polar with this feature. never tried. does this help?
  23. i see a lot of problems with mastercam trying to transition from one fillet to another where there is <= 0.0000" flat between them. however, it's not always a problem.... just sometimes... i'm with ninja on this one. sometimes you have to reorder your fillet, or change the way your design your solid. i have yet to run into a model i couldn't draw, but it might take some trial, error, and rework. i have even gone so far as to revolve cut, or sweep cut my fillets that i was having problems with.
