Files opening as Design Files

Just started using M2017.

I'm doing for instance "save some" then opening that file, it opens as a Design file and switches MC to Design instead of Mill.

As a workaround if I do a File - Save As, give it a different name, it will open as a Mill file then I wipe out what I don't want, PITA

I have start product set to Mill.

Never had this problem in any other previous versions.

Can I switch products with a drawing open so that I can turn the design file to Mill?

Never had to do it like this before????

Thanks for reading this.

Edit-

Just realized I can go Machine - Mill - Default and turn it to a Mill file but is there any way to just open as a Mill right away like it used to in previous versions?

  • Yes, more clicking around.

I don't get this new stuff, I haven't found anything in this yet were it makes me say" wow, cool, this is something I can use, or this saves a lot of time or any time.."

It seams like I have to click through more stuff to get were I want, before I had the icons I wanted on the screen and didn't have to click from tab to tab...

Thad,

The item you pointed to is semi-related. (R-08285)

It’s when dealing with importing (non-Mastercam) files.

I know that issue has been logged.

I don't know if the changes made for that issue# affects when we're talking about opening MCAM files.

I can check on that tomorrow with the people who know. (aka. not me :no)

There were changes in 2017 in regards to File-New.

When you open a file you’re essentially doing a File-New and then the file is opened.

File-New in this case no longer “forces” a Machine on you.

It sounds to me if you’re looking for...

If you open any file and it doesn’t already have a Machine (group),

it should add the default one of the  type you have specified in Config – Startup Product.

Only if the Startup Product is set to ‘Design’ would no Machine (group) get added.

Correct?

Yes, always open with your default product ( In my case Mill )

It was always like this as long as I remember.

As another person said many people are probably always running one product or machine and not starting

as a design product unless that's all they are paying for.

Also, what happened to Alt-U  undo?

Edit- I started digging around,it is now Cntrl-Z??

Where did that come from?

Changed it back to Alt-U

Correct.

I could be wrong, but I believe it has functioned like that since the control/machine defs were introduced.
