Compare casting vs finished models

I figured I could use boolean to subtract the finished part from the raw casting model, but that's against the "rules"

Results in multiple disjointed bodies as the casting is being machined on several faces

What do the pros do?

I was looking for an easy way to make sure I don't miss anything... doing a bunch of timestudies this week

How many disjoint bodies? Five? Fifty?

If it's countable on two hands, I'd make some dummy geometry that also subtracts each of the disjoint bodies as well, and do the boolean multiple times to have all the pieces on separate layers. Then you can control visibility or existence of each area as required. Also if its all "chaff" on the back or a bunch of small slivers, that dummy geo can just take it all away and you don't need to worry about it.

Set the casting as your stock for verify. Leave your finished model in view and create a dummy toolpath that cuts air. Verify the dummy toolpath and use the compare function in verify. You can increase / decrease your tolerance to get an idea of where and how much stock is left to remove.

This also works with an in process stock model to ensure you've cut everything you needed to cut.
