4TH AXIS QUESTION

Hello

I put a mc9 file on the ftp called 4thaxistest. what i did was draw a helix around a 10 dia part. what to palce this on my horizontal mill and use the b axis and y axis moves to machine this part. I trying axis sub but the toolpath is not right. Anyone see what i'm doing wrong

Delete the second operation. On the first operation, add the chain(spline, pick front) Turn off the T/C Plane Switch. Go to the Rotary Axis button, pick Axis Substitution, substitute z Axis, put in the diameter (10.1875) Pick CCW and Unroll leave the unroll tolerance alone unless you need to change it.

James there is no z axis sub just xand y? what do you mean by (spline pick front)

I find it easier to draw a 2d development and do an axis substitution. ie draw the part "unrolled"

I have put on the ftp test4thaxisbruce.mc9 Verify this wth a cylinder on the x axis 100"long and 10"dia to see what it does.

This is just general information on slots in cylinders. In order to get parallel sides on slots, use ROLLDIE.DLL with the SLOT option, or use CURVE5AX. For either one, drive the centerline of the slot only. ROLLDIE can work from the flat. CURVE5AX must have the cylinder surface in order to find normals, so you can't work from the flat.

John do i need a surface or solid to do this. or just a 2d contour

James I am nticeing that I draw the part like it is sitting on the rotary and the program from front say.

 

Were your file the part is drawn in the front plan and toolpathed and out puts the correct info.

 

If I remember this not usall for you correct?

I can't get to FTP sites here at work. We're limited to what sites we can visit.

i put a flie on the ftp -rotary helix heavy.mc9. this is what i.m after but i cant seem to reproduce it with the file i created

You just have to ge the settings right. Look at the sample file(s).

Rotate the part so it's on the X axis. If you're just going to ball-mill a groove on the groove centerline, you either have to have a surface so you can use CURVE5AX, or unroll the helix and use axis substitution (ROTARY AXIS on the first parameter page).
