I have found that the geometry of the part you are cutting has to suit the Plunge Mill operation. In my experience, you can't plunge into an area without a start hole, and it is much easier to plunge mill an area that is wide open as opposed to down in a pocket (less chance for error). That way you can start from outside the part shape and work your way across. You can pick your depths, stepover, number of passes etc... but it doesn't always end up being so easy or efficient. I worked with a guy who told me all about some steel blocks he plunge roughed and about how fast and great it was but when we got another steel job in, he never came close to doing what had been done before. Thats why I say it depends on the shape you are cutting and you have to have the right tooling. Don't try to plunge with a regular endmill. Buy a specific Plunge Mill.
