Climb vs Conventional milling for Sliiting Saw

Which method is better for milling .035" width slot and .150" deep lenght of cut 1.00". 700 slots !!! Material A2.

Vertical Hurco CNC machine.

Shall I use Climb or Conventional milling?

Keep the e.m. as short as you can. Use high helix solid carbide with coating. Flood with coolant. Mill down the middle of the slot first then climb mill the sides. Never Conventional cut if you can avoid it. In most cases you can climb anything any way. In the past I've only resorted to conventional cutting while profiling rough burned out parts with bad slag. Climbing tends to drag the slag thry the cut and beat up the tools. HTH!

Duh, I just realized you were asking about a slit saw and not an e.m.

Most would convential cut this set-up. The thinking is to prevent cutter from grabbing and exploding on you.

In that material I'd climb. Keep the chip load down so the cutter won't grab. No problem. For the most part the only thing I conventional cut is when roughing thin extrusion.

we conventional cut with our carbide slit saw that is 2.00 dia x .063 thick in cast iron at

250 rpm and .5 inches per min

with the stainless alloy we go to 135 rpm at same feed rate

seems to work well for us in one cut

My general rules are as follows:

 

1. Conventional mill steel & climb mill aluminum

2. Cut to full width and full depth when using slitting saws.

3. Plenty of coolant (flood) when cutiing tool steels.

I would conventional cut, one pass and brush on cutting oil with acid brush.

Conventional cut it. Use the smallest diameter saw that will clear the arbor. Hang the arbor with minimal clearance and indicate it in.

If you conventional cut the slot behind the cutter will help keep the saw blade from wondering off line and shattering.

Don't I have to take 3 passes, .050"/cut to .150' depth ?
