Extrude cut question

I am just learning solids and I have created a flat solid then drawn circles for bolt holes. When I chose solids extrude the "cut" button is greyed out sometimes. I have done it this way before but at times its greyed out and I can never figure out why. What would cause this option to work sometimes and not others?

The 1st operation must always be an "ADD".

After that, the "CUT" option should be enabled.

The only time I've noticed the "cut" selection to be unavailable is if there is no solid visible.

 

Is your solid visible when you are trying to use cut ?

 

Are you sure you have a solid and not just surfaces ?

well I feel stupid. I was turning off my solid level and picking my holes and so I wouldn't pick geo. I didn't want. It works fine if I leave my solid level on. Thats why it was working sometimes and not others! Thanks for the help!

I alwas tell my students to make the wire for your solid a diffrent color then the solid and put the solid on another level.

 

With the Color of the wire a diffrent color you can not see the wire for picking while the solid is still on the screen.

The most you might need to do is turn off shading.
