Drill Cycle

Hey: we're doing 2"dia. countersinks 1-3/4 deep in some 2" thick AR400 wearplate. We're using a 2" indexable endmill. We're ending up with a big rats nest on the mill after everyhole and have to stop the VF-4 after every hole to pull it off before we continue.I was told not to peck or chip break with this tool. But what we did try was a 5 second feed hold after every .100" of depth which seemed to work great. Is there somewhere in the MCX drill cycle where I can get it to dwell for a couple of seconds at depth incriments , Or is there another way that I'm missing.

What kind of tool is it?

I've machined alot of that ar400 and it can be quite nasty.

have you tried interpolating the countersink?

That way you won't have to worry about the rat's nest of chips.

You should have small round chips popping off a tool like that.

Take a look at your speeds/feeds. A heavier chip load and less spindle speed.

 

Do you have coolant thru the spindle??

we're using an ISCAR 2" Helimill E90AC, but before that were drilling a 13/16 through gole the a DR drill

were running at 200 rpm and feed 0.7, I'm not a machininst ,but this seemed to work with little squeeling or vibration (thats what the boss wants to see)

So if I bump up my feed, and leave the spd thank should solve it??

Tried it. Feed 1.5 Spd 200rpm

got chipload of .0025 and the spindle load went through the roof, almost redlining

Yeah on that HASS you are kind of asking alot. Easy way to do this would be make a custom drill cycle in a long code format. Then when you call this cycle up and put in a peck amount with a dwell command in the drill cycle and all should be good. Will need to do that in you 2nd call as well.
