Aluminium casting cutter recommendations...

Currently using Mitsubishi 1.000 bxd 4000 cutter.

Having a bit of a problem with tool life on this material.

It's VERY sandy, inconsistent and has a lot of "air" pockets in it.

In order to have fairly decent tool life had to slow down on sfm to about 1200 and .010 cpt.

Doing a bunch of facing, ramping, pocketing and helix bore with it.

I'm thinking the inserts are too sharp for this crap...

Any thoughts?

Mark

Iscar do a polished and coated insert IC928 for their helialu cutters. Toollife seems to be pretty good in cast ally. For finish facing or floor finishing a PCD insert is the only way to go. If you need to finish walls then a PCD coated 45deg helix solid carbide will do the trick. These tools will be pricey, but life expectancy is very high.

BTW, sand will be a killer no matter what.
