Delete associatve entities and a ? on Maitenance

Quick question.

I use X2 SP1

I imported the cast model and I imported the

machined model for reference.

I completely designed my mold components using the

cast model. I did not use the machined model for

any thing. I have not made one toolpath yet.

i moved the machined model to a different layer

and the layer that it was on had the exact same

amount of entities as if I copied it.

So I opened the old layer and found nothing

untill I unblanked the entities.

So I deleted them, and to my amazement both layers

became empty, rid of all the (machine models)

entities.

Why does this happen?

Also, Is the big file size problem fixed on

X2 MR2. Or any of the Service packs above the

version I am using. (Large files hang on tool path

generation over 100 meg)

BTW, I will be getting maintenance before the

end of the year.

Thanks

Rick

Rick we import much geometry form ProEngineer

and have had the same problem, as we can determine

depending upon how the original geomety was constructed and what software was used associated

entities must not be lost. Any original geomety that was used for creation that is erased will erase any built on top of it, much like MC solids.

If you create geometry to extrude or build upon

a solid model, then delete the geometry after extrudeing the protrusion or cavity created may not be reproduced. If you used geometry from the cast model cast as a foundation and then removed the foundation, all built on after the cast part will fail. One work around is to have the original

copied as a dumb solid, or shrink wrap, and if possible use that as a base. These types of files

do not carry associated entites with them, therefore files are smaller. Also MR2 now gives

the option of deleteing all or only non associated enities

What I've been doing is, when I get a model, take the viewable entities and move them to a different layer. Then go back to my blanked entities page, unblank everything and move them to an unused layer, label them "Blank", then move everything else back to the original level.

If there is any way to "break" the association to entities I would like to know, because some of our models are huge, and those unused associated entities are taking up alot of my valuable processor space.

If it is a surface model... no dice, the parent surfaces are necessary, but the wireframe is not.

If it is a solid then you can parasolid it out then back in and it is dumb. Or the nohist chook +1 3rd string.

Dumb=no associativity to anything...self-defined.
