Solids question

I have a solid model that I need to convert the outside of the geo. to create a cavity in soft jaws so I can machine the inside of the model. I tried creating surfaces and machining the inside of the surface with HST toolpath with limited success. Has anyone done this before? Any help is greatly appreciated.

create a block bigger than the part, then use boolean remove. Select first the block you create then your original solid.

Santa Fe is correct...you are going to want to use the male to create the female with boolean remove. If you have problems maybe you can put in on the ftp or email me and I can try and give ya a hand. If you email it to me you will have to save it as a version 9 for I am not as fortunate as teh rest.

Okay Sante Fe I did what you suggested and my original solid disappeared leaving the wire frame behind but didn't change my target body. So I chose non associative and kept my original solid but there's still no change to the target body. I created the target body from a rectangle and then extruded it. Should I make the target some other way??

Is your target a solid or just surfaces?

make sure you dont have surfaces that you created from the solid covering up your boolean remove..

 

did that before thinking it wasnt working to find I had created surfaces from the solid that was hiding the boolean operation

should be able to go associative...pick the one you want to keep..then pick the one you want to remove and it should work...as long as you dont bury one solid completely inside the other.

I am pretty much a rookie but would it be easier to extrude it as a surface and then alter it? I have found that on some jobs surfaces are easier to manipulate than a solid??
