Centerdrilling shaft

I have hand drillied 20 foot shaft before. It really depends on the stock, the operation done before this point, and what will be required of that when you are done. If you are doing CNC work I have always hold it close to the chuck center drilled it then brought it out on smaller machines. On bigger CNC lathes it is really hit or miss. Sometime we will send it over to the coventional department and have them steady rest it and put the center it just becuase we do not have big bore lathe for them to put the material inside of the machine. It the material is close to finish size then we always chuck one end steady rest the other and center drill it. If it is od ground stock like TGP(Turned Ground & Polished) then we always chuck one end and steady rest if big material. If smaller material we make sure the spindle liner is close to the material size so we ensure that the center drilled hole is as close to the center line as possible.
