Hard Drilling Help

Can some one recommend some drills ranging between .1"-.5" Dia. for hardened 4340 (40-Rockwell)for production. .5" hole is 8" deep.

You might want to take a look at Guhring or Kennametel products...they were able to help us out with a few deep Drills that let us drill .375 holes x 8 inches through in less than 1 and a half minutes ...no pecking required.

 

.878 dia holes in 30 seconds ...3.6 inches deep...578 holes before changing inserts....that is how many are on each tombstone here

Yes, Guhring 5521 Titex coated. We drill in H-13 48-50 Rc all day....but that is with coolant thru.

Guhring make great drills. You might also want to check out OSG as the local sales rep dropped off some new literature to me recently and have some very impressive drills.

Guhring, Titex, and OSG make great Hard Drilling drills... BTW High Pressure Coolant is a MUST to cost effective doing it.

Cooltwist is another one that makes good drills for drilling hard metals we drill 55rc 4130 all the time with no problem using these drill. 1000 psi really helps, but do it with regular coolant as well just not as efficient.

Kennametal makes good drills for this type of application as well. Like state before, thru coolant is a must. We drill armor plate all the time with Kennametal drills.
