5-axis chamfer?

Is there a chamfer toolpath for 5-axis that would behave similar to swarf cutting?

Nope, I have used curve 5 axis and get what I want pretty easy. The advanced 5 axis toolpaths will work on this as well. Got a picture?

I don't have any pictures but it is something I run across fairly often. It would be nice if there was a really clean way to do a chamfer toolpath in 5-axis.

Well most times chamfers on a 5 axis part are not true chamfers. They can be blends or transitions or other shapes where a chamfer cutter just does not really do the best job. If you use the surface next to the chamfer that will help you control your tool axis vector.

I use advanced multiaxis to do "clean" 5axis chamfers.

 

multiaxis:

surface paths:

parallel to curve

tool axis control:

tilt angle at side of cutting dir.:

90 - will yield swarf like cutting

0 - cuts the chamfer normal to surface

 

You can play with other settings but in these are important...!!!

For that you might try locking to 3ax and use ball e/mill in 3D chamfer mode by just chaining the edge curve. Works great.

I have had issues with the 3D chamfer because it doesn't keep the chamfer even with large steepness changes in the curve. The 3D works well for subtle depth changes though. Maybe I'm just doint it wrong, but i pretty much do it exactly as you described. Am I missing a setting? I think the only way to really do it well is as Savant put it.

I've not had that issue, but I usually will avoid steep transitions anyway. The only real tip I can give is use the smallest ball e/mill possible that wont break down...say a 3/16 w .007 x .007 edge break.
