speeds

Hello everyone,

not sure if this is the correct place to ask but,

I am using MC to cnc port heads and I would like to know what spindle speeds to use for a 3/8 lollipop cutter in alloy. Just starting out and would be gratefull of any help.

Hss or carb? What's the material of the part? Need a lil more info.

Carbide, 3 flute, Aluminium cylinder heads.

Currently using factory spec of 3000 rpm but seems too slow.

You should be able to run 5000-8000 rpm if your set-up is good and solid, and the tool doesn't stick out of the collet too far. Maybe more.

3000 is slow for aluminum, I will go for 10000 if it possible with your machine and will go for 2000 for feed as start, it depend if it rough or finish.

I'd be cautious cranking it up, depending upon the tool.

Some of these lolypops have to be very long, and have a small dia shank (so read weak).

You don't want to be in the same factory if that snapped spinning at 10krpm...

lollipop cutter is 6 inches long, 1/2 inch dia. at top tapering down to 3/8 ball.

Spindle will go 24,000 dont think that would be wise! Was hoping to hear what others are doing.

with that long cutter, the 3000 rpm is reasonable now

I have 150mm cutter 6mm dia, I cant go for more than 5000rpm when I need to go to 100mm depth.

more rpm = more vibration

Na, no darts coming from here. Were right & the rest of the worlds wrong, yeah right!! I was told in school 25 years ago that we would be using metric & sae would be dead by now. Probably won't ever happen. Salah is definatly right about speed & vibration, but 3000 still seems slow.
