PCMCIA card reading error

Well not exactly an error. The controller is not recognizing that a card is plugged in. Is it possible that these wear out?

 

Anyone ever had this happen?

Never had one wear out, but if the card accidently got re-formated it might not recognize it anymore. We have had this happen before.

I've gone through all the reformating ideas. Still no luck.

PCMCIA cards do "wear out". I've not worn one out yet, but I do know they have a finite number of reade/write cycles.

 

If this is a new card, my guess is that the capacity/speed of card is not compatable with the control. On new machines oin FACNUC controls, 1-2 GB is about the highest capacity you can use. I have some 128MB cards because of this. Online is the only place I've been able to find small capacity CF Cards.

It's a card that has worked in the past. I know it's compatible. We've tried multiple cards( brand new, smaller size, etc.)

Make sure it is formatted as a FAT partition, not FAT32. Also if its a Fanuc control...compact flash seems to be the only one that plays well. Also, I have had trouble with the newer "high speed" CF cards. I stocked up on a bunch of the 128MB cards because of this....

It's not the cards. Maybe I misworded the thread. I believe the problem is with the controller.

If it worked before, you probably have an issue with the reader. These things are notorious for getting loose, then they dont work anymore.

If you know the Fanuc service tech in your area, try calling him, maybe he has a sugestion to try?

Make sure theres no bent pins anywhere.

+1 on the bent pins. CF cards have a LOT of tiny pins, and these do wear out. I've had a lot of issues with crappy USB card readers going long before the cards themselves. If you can read and format the card on a PC, and verify that you have files there, it's probably on the other end.

How old is the card? Can you read it on a PC?

Yes, multiple adapters, multiple compact flash cards etc. They work on the other machines and on the pc's.

 

We have 2 of these machines...I pulled the card reader from each and am in the middle of switching them to confirm that it's the reader.

We have the same issue where I work. 3 HMC Moris 3 256 cards, and 3 different readers... Sometimes they work like a charm, other times we have to switch readers.. sometimes we end up plugging and unplugging the devices for 20+ minutes to get it to read. If all else fails, machine restart.. You never know whats going to happen. We used to use palm V.. took too long.. I honestly don't know what is quicker nowadays, but I am glad I don't have to put the programs on the machines personally!!!

We have a machine with a fanuc OI control that uses a card reader and RS232. When we switch from one to another we have to change some settings in the control. The card works on one channel and the RS232 cable works on another. Is it possible these settings were changed in you control.

we have a fanuc wire edm with a 18i-w control that will not read/write to a CF card. double checked the parameters and it still will not work. 128mb card and we were told it may be to big for the control to read.

Look into the slot on the control and make sure the pins didn't get mangled in there.

 

It happened here and I turned the machine off and straightened them out with some needle nose pliers and then it worked again.
