projecting a toolpath onto a 3D round pipe

I'm trying to figure out how to project a flat 2D engraving tool path onto a round pipe for a bbq smokestack!!! its for a students project but every time we try to project his name onto the pipe and apply cutter paths to it, the tool path wont form on the round pipe, it just creates a flat tool path???????

I don't know what mill level you have, but if I was doing it with what I have, (mill level 1), I would make the toolpath in 2d and then convert it to geometry. This could then be projected onto a surface which you would then apply a second toolpath too.

 

I'm sure somebody can give you better ideas, but its all I have.

are you using a 4th axis or just want to project

the geometry you trying to project -

is it all "lofted" above the target surface?

and does it fit without bleeding over the edges?

if not, then either:

A) use xform roll to wrap the target geo around the cylinder and cut it that way or

toolpath the flat geo and wrap it around with axis sub

Make sure you're using 3D contour, not 2D. Also make sure your depth is incremental.

well what i did to give it a try was, create a hollow cylinder as a surface then create letters about a half inch above the pipe, then i projected the letters onto the pipe, then applied a engraving toolpath to the projected letters, and for some reason mastercam forces all the letters to the same height "flattens the curved name" THIS IS ALL I WANT TO DO ON A 3 AXIS MACHINE!!!

Look on the FTP under X3 folder for 4th sample.mcx

it will give you to samples of surface project with engraving.

Review the ops manager for what option was used in the Toolpath Groups.

somebody can help me, my problem is, whent I want machine a surface, (contour, flowline etc) the mastercam show me a messenge, LEVE 2 IS REQUIRED FOR MACHINATE A SURFACE.

 

Them dont'n cant made machinate way
