DI water with the coolant

Afternoon everyone,

 

Has anyone used de-ionized water in their coolant solutions? We got a terrible corrosion problem and someone recommended using DI water. We machine different compositions of glass so we have to be careful of what we use.

 

Do any of you machine glass and if so, what are you using for coolant.

I would recommend getting in touch with Blaser. They are a very good cutting fluid company. They came into our shop and tested our water and then made a recommendation on what we should be using for our applications. I'm sure they would do the same for you. Give them a try.

We use DI water here with our Blasocut coolant. We used to change our coolant about every 4-6 weeks. After installing the DI system we change it about every 3-4 months.

Are you running the correct concentration of coolant/water ratio?

Do you have a refractometer?

most coolants require 6%-8% ratio mix

What kind of materials are you machining?

Mostly aluminum. Some stainless and mild steel with occasional G10 plastic thrown in. I'm machining some Torlon now.

That stuff destroys coolant, lol I always cringe when I have to cut this stuff,because I'm the one that has to clean the tank.

i used to use Di water untill i started having problems with foaming up. Our water is really hard here in Minnesota. We switched to using tap water and foaming problem went away.
