3D Surface Contour Finish

I have a question about doing a Surface Contour Finish on a .250 diameter chamfer. I have tried several tool paths but the chamfer is being cut on the inside of the pocket. The model I'm working with has a arc going counter-clockwise. When I verify the cut, it's milling it clockwise. The tool I'm using is a 1/8" ball end mill. In cut depths, I selected the top of the arc +.03 and the bottom of the arc. I'm still new to MasterCam. Any help is appreciated.

Hi, Im not sure I fully understand what you are asking. Is it just that your contour is cutting in the opposite direction to what you want? (i.e conventional milling instead of climb?) Or is it actually cutting the wrong geometry? If so containment/check geometry may be the cause of your hassles. Please provide more info and we can help you more. Welcome to the forum!

why not use surface finish contour, select all surfaces, select the top chain for your boundary?

Looking at your pic, I am guessing you're trying to machine the radius at the top of the pocket.

 

I would use a Surface finish blend

 

If you're going to use a 1/8" ball mill, take the lower chain and use xform offset contour and offset .06 in, the You can pick the solid, and use the upper and newly created lower chain as blend curves.

 

Course, if that is just a flat top with a radius, I would use a corner rounding endmill to shape the feature

try isolating the chamfer buy extending it, then id create curve around the surfaces, project it up, forming a bounding box, (or containment and) that way it would be a smooth all around.

You could also use Surface High Speed/Waterline and select the top curve of the fillet as the containment curve. Then set your depth for .063 below the Z value of the bottom curve of the fillet. Very easy to control the finish with the step down/max step over variables.

Are there "normals" in X? Haven't done a surface toolpath in X yet but in 9 if the normal was the wrong way it would want to cut on the wrong side of the surface.

how about a flowline toolpath , works a treat on fillets, just edit the flowline data to get it to cut the way you want, i.e top to bottom, climb or conventional etc.

Flowline is your friend here, easy to apply, easy to change

Or, if you only have Mill level 1, then 2D Swept will work nicely as well.

Flowline works good, no doubt but....

 

I like the Surface Finish Blend because many times you don't get clean fillets and flow lines that all go the same way, so as a default I have just taken to using Blend so I don't have to concern myslef with the flow lines.
