Impeller cutter suggestions

Recommended Posts

Will be cutting aluminum impellers in a couple weeks, getting close. Looking for suggestions on tool holders and tools, will probably have to finish with a 1/8" ball. Was thinking roughing with 1/2", removing further down with 1/4" then finish with 1/8". Looking at holders this morning, because of investment would like not to have to buy a shrink fit setup but it isn't out of the question.

What size impeller we talking?

I like tapered holders because of clearance and coolant access. Big collet nuts just suck!

For semi-finishing and finishing with 1/2" and below, I REALLY like these Tecnara MST DETa-1 Holders I've had outstanding success with them. If you're on a budget get the B or E type holders (Internal drawbar for the collet), the A type has the external tightening mechanism. The nose on these things are seriously compact. The E-Type is the only one beefy enough for roughing/slotting. The others are medium duty. VERY good runout specs. I've specified these on a number of turn-keys and have had great success with them.

James- The first project will be in the 6 1/4" dia range, but have a tight area between splitter and bigguns that will require 1/8 or 3MM. Nice concept on holders, I'll price it.

Jeremy- I actually have one of those I forgot about. Got it from Harvey Tool about a week after they started carrying them. Never thought of using it as an extension, I'll blow the dust off it and look at it thanx.

And Mike, providing enough force just about anything will come out :)

It came into today. We install it Tuesday. The first job I am running it on is a huge titanium forging so it will be a good test.

A buddy of mine rocks one of those doing all kinds of crazy roughing and long reach stuff on a variety of 40 and 50 taper machines. He swears by them. Too rich for my blood, but definitely very capable.

James,

Those look cool. Have any problems having tools pull out?

Mike

WHen I've used them properly I have never had one pull out, remember, semi-finishing or finishing, though I have done quite a bit with a 1/2 E style using HSM methods with success, but I don;t reccommend it for that. :D . Old Style roughing will not end well for the tool or part most likely.

I really like them though. I wish they would come in BigPlus so I could use them to hold floors tool to tool within .0001

Ron, you want to see one cut some SS on a Matsuura CUBLEX-35? ... come to my office Monday and I'll give you a show. Oh, I've got the part on a Raptor WOrkholding RWP-002SS. Pretty cool project.

That PowrGrip system is no joke. I actually prefer it over heat shrink. Like anything else though, it has it's "issues". You gotta make sure the holder and collet are CLEAN!!! NO grease, no oil, no particulates. ANYTHING caught between the tool and collet or the collet and holder will reduce gripping force. CHanging a tool is about 10-15 sec. No waiting for the holder to cool down, none of that mess.
