THREADMILLING

I RECENTLY HAD AN APPLICATION WHERE I NEEDED MORE DEPTH THAN NORMAL FOR A 3/8" - 16 NC

EXTERNAL THREAD. I FOUND A THREADMILL WITH ENOUGH LENGTH AND ORDERED IT. WHEN IT CAME IN

IT HAD A TWO SKIPPED FORM ON IT AND I COULD NOT FIND A WAY TO USE IT IN MASTERCAM.

 

ONE OF OUR CUSTOMERS REQUIRE MORE THREAD DEPTH THAN NORMAL AND I NEED TO FIND OUT

HOW TO USE THIS TYPE THREAD MILL.

 

ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

You have a p/n for the threadmill? If it is what it sounds like, a threadmill with every other tooth ground off, then program as normal - maybe a few added passes. So a 20 pitch thread would look something like:

IT IS AN ADVENT TOOL SOLID CARBIDE EXTENDED LENGTH THREAD MILL, TOOL # 381614-E3CR

A skip form is just to relieve pressure. You program it like any normal thread mill. By having the missing tooth you have less tool pressure on the longer tool inmproveing the quality of your thread.

If you have a 16 TPI threadmill that has 1" of cutting length, you would tell it 16 active teeth, at least that's how I do mine.

All this does is determine whether or not the toolpath can do the form in 1 depth cut or whether or not it has to do multiple depth cuts to complete the thread.

It's not THAT big of a deal really, it would just increase the cycle time a little bit... play around with it to get what you want.
