Need tooling ideas for expanding mandrels for ID work holding.

So, i have to dream up an expanding mandrel to ID chuck on a part. The operator will lower the part over the mandrel and then he'll reach through the part with an allen wrench and tighten a bolt that has a tapered cap or a tapered washer under the bolt cap.

 

I've made a couple of these in a pinch but was hoping that I could see examples of other designs that would help me improve on this one.

Mill or lathe? What kind of machining is involved? Rough and finish, holes?

We use similar mandrels. They work pretty good.

If I understand your description see the attached picture of a Mitee-Bite product. Not sure of the size range you need but it might give you some ideas.

^^^ I have used those for miliing, they work great. Make sure the operator doesn't overtighten them, releasing them was always waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay harder than tightening them...
