Can an undefined tool be used in 5-axis toolpaths?

That is what I ended up doing,

I used the slot mill tool definition with a custom tool profile drawn on a designated level, the trick was figuring out the scaling factor to get the tool to show up as the right size in backplot/verify.

Thanks a lot for the help, both of you.

I hate it when I have to create one tool two different ways in one program, depending on the toolpaths I use.

I force a toolchange as a little "red flag" everytime I do that. Also, creations of custom tools in X7 is a little off from what it was in X6. Tools that worked in X6 won't work in X7 without minor adjustments.
