Surface finish Contour Help

I am trying to do a surface finish contour on some surfaces. I would only like to mill the outside of the surfaces, but I can’t figure out how. I have tried creating boundaries and anything else I could think of.

 

I posted the file under the MC9_Files folder

Create a "Flat boundary" surface in the center of the electrode, and include it in the toolpath as either a check or drive surface.

Import this file into your file

Bottom Core ELECT_1flat_surf.MC9

Chris what Scott said works great. You also have some other options. To use the containment boundaries you need to chain two. The outer boundary and an inner boundary and the tool will only go in between the two boundaries. Another option would be when you are picking your drive surfaces have the check surfaces set to U and then any surface not picked as a drive will automatically be placed into your toolpath as a check surface. Now by adding as little as .0001" stock to leave on your check surfaces it will not cut on the inside.

I just had to add that nested containment boundaries rock(before v9 you only were able to have a single boundary).

Roger, using 2 boundaries would give you an error about "nested boundaries", based on the toolpath that machine is trying.

That flat boundary check surface does the trick. If you want a cleaner surface I would recommend recreating the outside surface without the cutouts and cut those separately with a projected toolpath or something similar.

If you want the nested toolpath boundary, CIMCO's HSM is MINT, thanks Bullines for the "mint", it has the ability to do nested boundaries. Processing time is superfast as well.

+1 in the check surfaces. I had lots of trouble with containment boundry errors.

If you really want to do this simple like, how about 2D swept instant toolpath? No nice Highspeed moves yet from what I hear, then some 2D contours. This particular part is a Level 1 oldschool toolpath part.
