Long reach inserted cutter

I need help finding a cutter to reach the bottom of a pocket. Diameter can range from 1-1.500" and has to reach 8". I'd prefer to stay as small on the diameter as I can so it will be more usable on other parts. This is part of a weldment and the pocket will be roughed pre weld when its only 3" deep but after weld it will have gussets around the pocket that will require 8" to reach the bottom of the pocket. Tolerances aren't critical and surface finish doesn't have to be perfect so I don't really want to spend the money on anti-vibration tooling if I don't have to. Sandvik has 1" and 1-1/4" diameter cutters but the overall is only 9", with my current tool holders that doesn't give me room to get even 1 set screw on it.

We have several Iscar Multi-Master type holders with a 12" long carbide shank. You can screw on different types of mills to the bottom. I think our biggest is 1.25"

It's far from being cheap, though.

Sandvik makes a tools with dampening technology that will reach out there.

Yes not cheap, but I was turning a bore over in Malaysia last year with some of their lathe tools that was 9" long in a 1.501 +/-.0002 bore with no problem. I have seen their tools cut 22" deep 9" diameter bores with no problem. Yes the tools are not cheap, but when someone engineers parts that require these kind of tools that was already consider before the job was ever taken to be made.

I am loving these Mitsubishi APX4000 cutters, the 1.50 diameter cutters are up to 14" long.

+1^ on the mit. "apx" cutters. we are using the "apx3000" .625 to 1.5 dia's

on every thing from alum to ti 6al-4v. so far we have good insert life.

also using the "ajx" cutters in ti 6al-4v with outstanding results

doing some serious roughing for us.

Yeah take one of those Mits heads and put it with a Sandvik Dampening body and you got a tool made to do the job.
