Bonding steel plate to Granite Surface Plate

Recommended Posts

We are wanting to bond a 6" x 6" x 1" thick steel plate to the corner of a granite surface plate. This will be for our magnetic base of our Faro Arm. We do not want to drill & bed in threaded inserts. So we are investigating this option.

Has anyone had success with some kind of epoxy, What did you use ??

bonding material must harden rigid (no Silicone or construction adhesive)

Thanks in advance.

Best way I have seen is either make a Clamp to the bottom of the surface plate, or drill and pot inserts into the plate. IF you think about it not a that porous of a surface so if you were going to bond a plate to it to hold your $100k arm you would want to use a process that ensures it never falls off. You would need to rough up that section of the plate to remove the polished finish. How do you do that without messing it up. Better to drill 3 or 4 holes and pot inserts in verses roughing a large section to hope you can bond some plate that is only ever going to let go that will be held on by glue.

Sorry if it were my shop I would not go about in that way you have mentioned here.

BTW I was the product manager for the Master3DGage and I did work with Faro people many times and they never recommend what you are talking about. Would not hurt to consult them about best practices for your application.
