Good evening everyone,

my goal is to learn about high speed machining but i noticed that there are a lot of parameters and different options of HSM. can anyone give me a hand and guide me to a book or a website where they have step by step tutorials of how to program HSM and how to play around with the feed and rpm since they are different from a regular pocket toolpath. i would also like to know how much of radial and axial engagement is recommended.

thank you

Best place to start honestly is Youtube. Watch some videos from various tool manufacturers and mimic that. Helical Solutions, Data Flute, SGS, Swiftcarb are goods ones to search.

Starting points for steels- Max depth up to 2.5xd, radial stepover 5-10% of tool dia, feedrate double or triple normal, sfm at least double normal.

Starting points for aluminum- Same DOC as above, stepover 20-30%, max rpm, feddrate double or triple normal

Have used Helical's for awhile, its ok but its pretty limited. I know on aluminum/ volumill...it outputs garbage. Also it doesn't allow you to enter in your step down/ step over to recalculate. I am trying to get the powers at be to get HSM Advisor. I like it a lot better, money well spent. I am pretty sure it would pay for itself in a day's time.
