Stainless Damascus

Recommended Posts

Interesting...

We had a local lad (gunsmith) come into us asking if we could make parts out of Damascus steel.

And he kept repeating himself that he would supply this 'Damascus Steel' and it had to be Damascus Steel and nothing else.

He said it cost a fortune and he found another gunmaker who could supply it and he's getting it specially made...

So I looked on the interwebs and found this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damascus_steel

which looks like it could all be a load of hot air and wind because the stuff doesn't actually exist?

"Damascus Steel" is used extensively for knifemaking  and things of that nature. Never have seen it called out on a print as it could be any combination of metals. Normally the purpose for it on knives is for decorative advantages rather than any egde-holding advantage unless it is a "San Mia" (Soft outer layers with a very high RC core)  What is the part for?

There can be advantages to using pattern-welded "Damascus" in certain circumstances.  It can give the material most of the toughness of the softer alloy along with most of the hardness of the harder alloy, along with producing micro serrations when sharpened properly if the grain is of the right size and crosses the edge in the right way.  As far as using it for gun parts, I'm sure it's decorative.  Machining properties will depend on what alloys it's made from, but I think your guess is reasonable.

Wouldn't you want hard outer layers and a soft core? Unless you just want to bludgeon someone to death.
