Prime turning plunge feedrate

For those that have used Prime Turning, have you utilized the plunge feedrate at all? Or do you keep it unchecked?

This will be my fist attempt at Prime. If all goes well we should be able to save an hour of cycle time per part with Prime.

18" dia 12" long turning down to 7" or so.  4142pht

Jeff, i trialled this tool for Sandvik, we ended up at 3mm depth of cut, 0.3mm plunge into the radii, 1mm per rev, and 285 mtrs/min, the tool ran for around 38 mins, with no discernable wear

3mm per side I assume? What material was this?

O8om40 steel, EN8, and this was 3mm per side, i have a 100KW spindle, and the tool ran about 30% of power,

ok so that's roughly equivalent to U.S. 1045 steel.

We have an Okuma LB4000 with a 50hp(i think) spindle, so we should be fine in that department.

Thanks!

I wonder if you could do 6mm per side on a 75hp machine with a rigid setup. Was taking 13mm per side back in in early 90's on a VTL and would be curious to compare this against some of those conditions being offered up by prime turning.

No reason why not, but obviously you would not get 1mm/rev of feed rate.Sandviks selling point(to me), was they could not get the insert to wear, i reckon, i could have run the insert at the speeds/feeds for around 60 minutes
