    Lofting Letters

I am making a brand for a friend of mine to do some woodburning. I'm trying to kind of "loft" these letters, so I don't have to get into too small of an area with a square endmill. I figure if i can loft, or draft the sides of the letters, I can just surface with a ball mill, and in some areas, I will only need to get just below the surface to make the brand functional. So , how can I easily loft these edges? I've tried a few different ways and nothing seems to work.

    Lofting Letters

Yes.... There's a very good reason....I'm inexperienced, and didn't think about it! As simple as that.

    Lofting Letters

I know there's a handful of other ways I could achieve the same end result. I just figured it was a good opportunity to learn something new on the software side.

    Lofting Letters

I can't test it at the moment, but isn't that going to get weird in the areas like the s's, where the walls get very close to each other?
  5. I'm working on a part that is by far, the most complex part I've had to make. Not much in the way of 3D surfaces, but lots of features. I'm looking forward to it, but also a bit intimidated. I know I see a lot of people using toolpaths like waterline or hybrid for pockets and stuff like that. 9 times out of 10 I end up using Optirough/rest, Contour, Dynamic, or Drill toolpaths. I figured that a part like this might be a good opportunity to learn some new skills/tricks. If anyone would be willing to check out my .mcam file, and give any suggestions they might have, I'd appreciate it! Feel free to critique anything else I've got going on. https://www.dropbox.com/s/qb9alp8wcu0w6o8/CARRIER.mcam?dl=0

    Matsuura MX520

    F3 is a high accuracy, multiaxis finishing setting. I would guess F1 would do a whole lot better. G131 P(1-3) - 2 axis machining G131 M(1-3) - 3 axis or 3D machining G131 F(1-3) - Simultaneous 4 or 5 axis machining G131 D1 (only 1) - Drilling or Tapping 1 leaning towards speed/roughing, 3 leaning towards finishing/accuracy. Unless it's one of the older HandyMan types, then it's G131 R(1-10) Anyone more knowledgable, feel free to correct me.

Too Much Code - How Do I Control This?

When I first started using Mastercam, my programs were MASSIVE, and I had no idea why. I've had toolpaths reduced to like a tenth of the size they were just by playing with the arc filters.

Too Much Code - How Do I Control This?

just what savagkd was saying. Turn on line/arc filter settings, set your total tolerance for less than the amount of stock you're leaving. Then you can play with the slider to see how it changes things. I generally keep it at 50/50. Make sure your minimum arc is low enough too, otherwise I believe it will try to output small arcs as line segments instead of arcs.

Turn on Arc filters Pretty sure the guy making the video has a hangover, but the info is there.

    Raster extension

What's the best way to extend a surfacing toolpath (raster, in this case) so it extends beyond the surface of my part? In this case, I made a copy of the model, and used push/pull to make a larger version of the model, but I was curious if there's a better/easier way to do this, for cases where changing the model might not be as simple. Enjoy my terrible screenshot drawing.

    Raster extension

I need to play with that more. As of now, every time I go into the multi-axis toolpaths I'm a bit overwhelmed by the amount of additional options!!!

    Raster extension

Perfect. Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!

    Raster extension

I was looking for it, as I thought I remembered there being an extension function in Raster, but I am not seeing it.

    Need help on this tool

I'd even accept steering me in the right direction to finding the info on my own. My google-fu is failing me on this one.

    How do you calculate this?

    Having 2 MC Layouts

Is there a way to save 2 different MC layouts? All I'm really concerned with is placement of the managers. When I'm at my desk, I have them off to the left on another monitor. When I am out at the machine, I have to try to pull them in from some place off screen and re-arrange them. Is there a way to save the 2 layouts seperately?

    Having 2 MC Layouts

I should have noted, this is on the same laptop. At my desk there is a docking station, which connects me to 3 monitors

    Need help on this tool

What do you mean by this? Are you saying the tool is touching the part in 6 places? How do you even determine this?
  19. Has anyone here ever machined nickel plated aluminum? The plater says it will be impossible to mask some of the features, so machining away the nickel plating has been suggested. Has anyone here had success with this? I'm told it's going to be a nightmare, and to avoid it at all costs. Any advice?

    Milling Nickel plated aluminum

Honestly, I'm not sure. I know that each masked face is a critical feature, where a subassembly mounts. Maybe they're concerned about flaking when attaching the subassembly? I'm not sure, to be honest.

    Milling Nickel plated aluminum

From what the plater says, most of the problems with the masking are due to very thin strips in some areas. We are machining some sample coupons, having them plated, and machining them, so I'm guessing it will prove to the customer that it's not a reasonable idea.

    PC Upgrades

When working with large MC files, what PC upgrades are a benefit? Are wait times most improved with ram upgrades? CPU? GPU?

    PC Upgrades

I do have an SSD. Time to talk to the bosses about RAM and a GPU.

    PC Upgrades

I've got an i7, and 32gb ram (working on another 32gb), but I imagine the Quadro T1000 is what's bottlenecking me the most.

Condolences, lol. Thanks. That's what I'm getting from everyone I've asked. Hopefully we can find an alternative.
