Compare two 3D files

Hello Mastercam community,

I have two 3D STP files, and I need to compare them for differences in geometry. What's the best way to do this using Mastercam or any recommended tools?

I don't know how detailed of a comparison you need, but I just do a FIle-Merge (make sure each part is a different color) and look for differences.

Thank you for the suggestion! I do use the File-Merge method as well, but I'm dealing with parts that have the same dimensions but numerous intricate details, such as varying hole forms and other complex features. This makes the process quite time-consuming. I was hoping to find a more advanced method or tool that could help streamline the comparison for such detailed parts.

There is a Mastercam built-in tool. 'Change Recognition' command in file tab.

There is stock compare tool in Stock model..

Solidworks Professional has a file compare utility that is very good

but it's not much use if you don't have a seat.

Several ways I can think of:

• File Merge then visually compare while in wireframe view then shaded view then translucent shaded view
• Convert one to an STL and import it as stock then run toolpaths to see differences
• Use Solidworks Compare Documents function
• Open both STP files in Notepad++ and use their File / Compare function but you'll have to be able to understand how STP files are written (they are text files)
• No Bid the job.

I usually set one of the models as my stock, make a dummy toolpath that cuts nothing, then use the second model as my part model. Jump into verify and use the compare function.
