Tool "stickout", "overhang", "projection" or other terms...?

Recommended Posts

Hi.

Me and a colleague (we're from Norway in Europe) got into a discussion about what's the correct term for what I call "tool-stickout length".

What do the native English speaking folks here say? Is there a formal term and an informal one for this?

Also, does one use other names for what I call "work piece stickout" or "boring-bar stickout" etc..?

Any other terms for this?

I've always used "Tool Stickout"...Whether in regards to milling tools or turning tools.

In my nc program I notate it this way

(T11010375 / 3/8 3FL ENDMILL / MIN Z DEPTH: -.390)
     (DESTINY / V32408S / MIN TOOL EXT -1.000 / CRIB LOCATION)

(T12010250 / 1/4 3FL ENDMILL / MIN Z DEPTH: -.220)
     (DESTINY / V31608S / MIN TOOL EXT -1.000 / CRIB LOCATION)

(T12010187 / 3/16 3FL ENDMILL / MIN Z DEPTH: -.233)
     (DESTINY / V31205S / MIN TOOL EXT -.750 / CRIB LOCATION)

and my set up sheet

Not sure it really matters as long as everyone in your company is on the same page.

Having said that we generally use Out Of Holder (OOH) in the Pac NW (I am sure there are exceptions).

I think this is a little more descriptive, Tool Out Of Holder is pretty unambiguous, Tool Stickout, on the other hand, might prompt the question: Stick out of what?

We are definitely in the realm of picking fly dung out of peppercorns on this one, I think.
