Speed/Feed on 304

Got some 304ss here that needs slots milled with 1/4 carb. endmill. Anyone have any recommended speeds/feeds.

we use tialn coated mills at .007 to.012 depth of cut at around 4500 rpm and about 60 inches per minute

Try 150 SFM with .0008 - .0012 chipload ? Up to .125 depth of cut.

Get a 3/16 Carbide rougher and cut .25 d.o.c at about 1500 rpms and about 15 ipm. Then come back and leave .005 on the walls with a 3/16 carbide then take the wall up to 1.5 deep in one cut at 200 rpms on 2 ipm will leave the sides looking like glass if slot needs to look good at a size close to .25 if slot is alot bigger then get a carbide rougher 1/4 and run it at 1500 rpms .375 d.o.c and then again do the same with the finishing.

why don't you try slot mill, change angle to like 1.5 to .5 degrees and play with step overs ,ruff and finish passes and your in .meaning you can almost go as fast as you want with in reason. no problem i'll be here all week

Where did you come with these speeds and feeds? I've been looking for info on this kind of feeding for a while, but can't find anything.

trial and error we cut alot of stainless and found machining this way crates less heat and distortion and provides decent tool life usally i will mill thru the part buy the amount of my depth cuts so as the mill wears it still cuts clean thru the part !!!i some times cut faster 100 ipm but 304ss is harder

I cut alot of ss plates from 1/4 to 1/2 thick with slots in them and I use reg 4 flt carb e-mill and put a .015 rad on corners I run at 1200 rpm 25 ipm with ramp at .025 step and have had no problems, just a place to start. good luck
