UG Cam

One question...I have become pretty good with Mastercam Lathe, but I have a demo for UG. Is it worth the time? Does anyone use UG Cam? I am pretty biased, and I love Mcam, but I also like learning new stuff. Again, will it be a complete waste of time? Does the functionality compare?

Whilst I have experience with UG LAthe, there is a local user here, who uses UG lathe. When he saw what MAstercam was like, all he said was *sigh...why didn't my boss buy that..." He pushed to get Mastercam, but his boss said one system was enough. I guess UG althe wasn't all that good, at least in his eyes

My guess is by the time the 30 days expires,you will probably just be able to run a toolpath.

I always heared there was a big learning curve with UG.

Yes, the learning curve is pretty steep with UG. I was pretty much self taught with it (pretty poor training from the supplier) but I always felt like I could have got far more out of the software than what I did

 

BTW, in my previous reply, it should of read "Whilst I have NO experience with UG lathe"

I am using MCAM for last 4 years. And from this year I started using UG parallely. Not doing lathe though if you compare mill it is very tiring and I find mcam faster for setting job. I think it's the same for lathe too.

Our engineers use UG, I spent 20 hours in class with the UG rep. It took him 15 min to create a toolpath to drill and tap one hole.

 

UG may be good for DEs, but in my opinion, it has no place in our shop.

I appreciate the feed back. I probably won't mess around with it. I was hoping that there might be one or two apps we could use. We have a ton of ug licenses for the design guys, and I could probably get one pretty easily, by the sounds of things, it would be a waste.

I have been useing UG cam for the last year after 10 years of Mastercam. I agree that the learning curve is quite steep and there is also a mix of new and old menus that take some getting used to. I was lucky enough to receive training from the suppliers which took most of the heartache out of the change. I would not say that one system is better than the other just that these two are different and require a different method of thinking.
