depth for taps

Like bernie alluded to there is no one way to calculate it. Cleveland Twist has a great quick reference chart for drills, taps, and reamers. Contact your local distributor and he can probably get you one. If you need specific information today, just ask the specific question.

1.5* dia min for steel 2 for cast ect and 3 for aluminum is this what you meant. Usually 5 x pitch plus depth you need plus .12 for chip clearance is what I was taught. 5 x pitch is because regular taps have 5 imperfect threads on the bottom. hth

You should use a thread depth gauge for NPT threads, but general rule of thumb (that I was taught and used to use until I bought a gauge) is three full turns of the fitting by hand. I find it's usually about 3/4 of the way up the tap, but that can vary depending on where you buy the tap from.
