If you con talk about Cimatron, why not SolidCam

Do a search of this site

Iskander has used SolidCam and he gave me his opinion of it some time ago.

The concept of CAM inside SolidWorks is very attractive to me.

I do almost all my design work in SolidWorks

and, in theory, an associative cam package like SolidCam or CamWorks seems to be a perfect solution.

In practice it doesn't work that way. Both CamWorks and SolidCam are mindless robots. You have to teach them how to cut the part by building knoweldge bases.

Its a lot of work building them and there are limited approaches available to solve a problem.

If you are building the same kind of parts over and over SC or CW might be a good choice.

In a job shop environment you will find youself going back to Mastercam.

You can go to SolidCam's website, fill out a forma and download a full working copy, complete

with PDF manuals and tutorials. The only thing it won't do is post gcode.

I spent 4 months playing with CamWorks2003 and

downloaded SolidCam's demo version last month.

I'm still using Mastercam.

I am not a swinger .

I work on Cimatron because all the shop works on it .

When I used MAstercam I would not change it for Cimatron ,and they do tried to switch me .

First of all it will take you time to be effective using new prog.

You would gain nothing or not so much as you think ,every program has limitations and bugs .

I would not implement deeper .

May be I would prefer Cimatrom design part ,it is a great thing ,fast and mighty ,but Nc I would prefer Mastercam .

Cimatron`s Nc has some cool features too .

I would not trade Mastercam or Cimatron for Solidcam.

But still I used it and got good parts .

I do liked their Dos-ish NcTool very much.

In too words -do not jump from program to program every year because of a cool windows look or some ad .

Use what you have -Mastercam ,Cimatron ,Edgecam ,Solidcam ,whatever but learn it good and be effective
