I was wondering if any of you guys have much experience w/ Monel? I have to machine a few castings w/ some pretty crazy stuff (geometry) going on & I was just looking for a decent (conservative) starting point.

Officially the alloy is QQ-N-288 w/ 65kpsi min tensile strength.

Does anyone have a suggestion? The castings cost $8200 each, so I'm pretty scared about breaking a tool & scapping a part.

I don't know about your grade of MONEL, but here is a few item with MONEL alloy 400 (same for 401, 404 and R405)

2) doc = .060

Both 304 and 316 have a lower surfaces feet, but, depending on your setup--rigidity, tool extension, age of machine, etc., these might be a good place to start as both Joel and threept82 have stated.

In case you don't have the numbers, here are the recommended info for 316 ss.
