Does anybody know of a hss endmill that pushes thin material down onto the table instead of lifting it up while it is cutting.I thought there was a cutter to do this, but maybe i am just losing my mind. Material is 1/16 alum. With a pocket .04 deep.

Maybe RH cut LH spiral ?

 

Assume you are cutting in 1 Cut and spiraling out from center and not edge clamping.

Clamping the edges and also in the center. A 4" center hole will be milled later.

At 1/16" thick with .04" deep pockets you might try double sided tape and tape the part to a rigid surface. HTH!

Though this sound like a job for a vacuum fixture.

They make spiral down cut mills. I use them all the time. I also use double stick tape and it will surprise you how well it holds. Since your material is only .0625 thick I might suggest after you machine the part spray mineral spirits around the edges it will dissolve the adhesive and you can pull your part off without too much stress. The mineral spirits will evaporate off quickly.

Yeah, A vacum fixture would be great. I did alot of parts like this over the years and wished I had one. The tape works good too but you got to remember to use narrow strips under the parts so you can desolve the tape with MEK to get the parts off.

Unfortunatly no vacuum check,only one part to do. Just going to get the cutters and give it a try. I will also use the tape.

The super sticky double sided tape works wonders. That and super light DOC's.

 

I had a part I had to run a while ago, plastic (Ultem1000), 1/4" thick but milled down to 1/16" floor. Was out of tape, managed to make a custom fixture for it and bolt it in the middle in a few places, and it worked great.

There was an article in this month's Cutting Tool Engineering Magazine about using single flute cutters to mill thin parts. It says that these cutters will not lift the part. The article is on page 22 if you have the magazine.

I use Tim Simmermans suggestion of single (straight) flute router endmills.

Also use Rh/Lh spiral emills....

I make many times the lid(cover) for hsg. for telecommunications companies,even from 1/32,1 mm thk sheets .Most imp is how you holding the part than tool itself

Look at Onsrud cutters. We use the 'O-Flute' a lot to cut alum. sheet on our Komo router. It's a single straight flute router bit, and it will not lift up the material.

We purchase our double sided tape from a company called Reinert Paper Company 903-893-0612.

The name on the inside of the tape roll is "Intertape" and it's made in the USA.
