On the File Open window the folder with the up arow will start you browsing wherever you'd like, the one next to that is straight to your desktop

 

You can also use the pull down at the end on the filename window and navigate as well

In V9, when you used the "Browse" function, you got a slide show of files in a specified folder (& matched a mask). I don't think that functionality is there is X. The closest you can come (as far as I know) is to use the MC style file Dialog box & manually page through the thumbnails (which you have to make sure are bieng saved). Thre was an issue involving the thumbnails causing crashes when being saved in MR1, I don't know if that issue was resolved with MR2 or not.

Chuck is right, the File-Browse function was removed for X. You can choose File menu, Open, double-click the folder to list files, click the Bitmap button, and use the scroll bar to browse through the files. To open a file just double-click on the picture. Also as Chuck said, to display the bitmap a thumbnail for the file must exist.
