how to profile a bowl cavity?

Can someone give me advise how to mill a cavity like half of a bowl.

8.00 dia and 4.00" deep.

Material: 4140- kind of hard stuff.

I don't have much experience in profiling. using MasterCamX. level-2.

I was thinking to rough it out using 1" carbide insert endmill, then rough profile with 5/8 car, ballnose, and finish with 1/2' ballnose.

Question:

Do I use flowline for roughing and finishing ?

how much material leave for finishing and the value of the stepover?

Any other suggestionare appreciated.

thanks.

I'm not 100% sure what you can and can't do with Level 2 but surface finish scallop would be my choice for the finish toolpath.

Surafce finish rough pocket spiral for roughing, and surface finish Parallel for semi finishing, or surface finish contour and a shallow toolpath.

Or if you have a Lathe?

I would use Larger tooling say 2"Dia round inserted tipped tool for roughing.

Use the 5/8 ballnose for finishing, the 1/2"dia just means a longer cycle time.

Yeah level 2 should work fine.

surf-rough-pocket will remove alot of the

material, parallel to get to the bottom.

Flowline ought to work for a fin. path.

goldfish,

If you are still having problems you can put it on the ftp, or send me a e-mail, and I will help you out. I would use a large inserted endmill, to rough it out, and we actully use a 3/4 inserted ball to finish our surfaces in stainless, we don't cut any 4140 at all. If you cant get a inserted ball nose, the sc should work out good

I used to like the using the finish flowline whenever I could also as the stepover was consistant on the contoured surfaces and the tpath generation was fast. Scallop is great when needed but takes up a lot of memory.

To rough I also agree with everyone that Surface

Rough Pocket is the way to go.

Cheers

Is this a true bowl shape? We do cavities very similar to bowls in our headrest tooling. Use surface rough pocket and surface finish scallop very effectively. Running in 6061AL, but we run a lot of 4140 in other parts. In AL I could do this cavity in about a half day depending on shape.
