I'm in here since about 3 years on a regular basis but never really posted but here I am today. We bought a new 5x milling machine (2 months ago) and I had always heard not to use filter in 5x but tought I could when in positionning but today, as I was doing a surface finish project...surprise... Gouged a part that was on the machine for about 50 hours! So I hope I can avoid anything similar to someone else because believe me it feels really bad. Remember...NO FILTER IN 5X.

Thanks for your interests here, the situation is that we just got new machines, started posting through ICAM (wich I'm new to) and bought Vericut but have'nt got training yet so I tought the "arc fitting" in ICAM was the problem because if I don't activate it, no problem. If I do, I get all kind of weird moves. There's no problem with my toolpaths at all. I'm waiting for the guys at ICAM to look into the post. MCAM posts, I had control on my stuff but ICAM is a complete other game...

Thanks again guys and I'll keep you posted!

Simon teh... explain this to the managment now...

I agree w/ Ron. I filter my 5 axis toolpaths too all the time and have never had problems. I did have a gouge once on a finish cut but I discovered that two surfaces weren't trimmed properly in one tiny area and the tool plunged slightly at that point b/c it didn't know what to do with the mismatched surfaces. I didn't see this gouge on the rough cut b/c the step increment was larger than the gouge, but it did show up on the part after the finish cut was complete. Luckily the gouge wasn't in a critical area and it polished out so we saved the part, otherwise I would have had to explain it. eek.gif
