3d laser scanners & master cam

Do any of you forum members use 3d laser scanners and if so can you program the scanned images in Master Cam?

 

I have a project going right now that I am cutting out some parts in walnut that were scanned composite carvings. We had another company scan these parts and their scanner only uses it's own sofware to create the gcode. It is limited to how the the part is machined and mastercam would create a more efficient program.

 

I might consider purchasing a 3d scanner....

I am pretty sure it is in a point cloud format and there is software for the tune of 30k that you use to obtain a solid from that data..

We have a Faro laser scanner and use Geomagic to convert the points to a surface model and import as either a .stp or .iguess.

Ernie at Verisurf also has some import capabilities for Point Cloud type info. Not as expensive as Geomagic

You'd like it.....we use it to scan blocker impressions for forging dies....it helps to keep track of the customer's tweaks.

I can understand that for sure...

 

Kind of hard to put down on paper what someone did with a Haskins and a carbide burr....

 

If I had the money I would have already had that software for my own personal use...I heard several years ago it is extremly powerful stuff..

While looking on the internet I came across this scanner www.nextengine.com I requested more info. It mentions working with popular 3d applications. The price of $2495. is low enough to get my attention and some of the examples that they show are of the type of work I would be doing.
