When you're selecting your chain, if the arrow doesn't appear at the beginning of the entity that you click, you have something wrong with the chain. There's a gap in there or overlapping entities. That goes for any kind of chaining/selecting.

Dan I do not think there is anything in the "normal" category when it comes to chaining tolerance. If you work with tolerances that require +/-.005 there is no need for your tolerance to be .0001, could cost you headaches as you have right now, but if you work with close tolerances it is importend that your geometry is chained within a tight tolerance.
