surfacing roughing using octagon inserts

Hi All,

 

I'm using a insert end mill that has octagon type inserts in a 3 axis surfacing roughing path, the general shape is a dome so I'm always cutting up hill. the question I have is what type of tool def to use to accurately define the octagon to MC?

I've tried a face mill and a chamfer type tool, both undercut the model… any help is

Chamfer mill undercut?? Sure it was defined correct?? I would use a custom tool then.

I would say that's not a wise choice of tooling to use.

If it is a roughing path, program it as a sharp

Endmill.

 

You will only leave a small a mount

of extra material for the semi finishers to clean up

 

I do that with aluminum, the cutter is a 1-1/2"

Plungable indexable with 1/8 corner rad inserts.

update... It turns out it was a P.E.C.K. problem all along, I figured that out when a custom tool also did not work. the reason I tried a chamfer def is because it had all the variables I needed to convey to the system. I went back (just for fun) and coded all three tool defs (face, chmfr, custom) using the same parameters.... all produced different code (cimco compare) yet all cut correctly (solid verify).
