Rol-Man Astroloy

Good Morning Everybody

 

Quick question, we have a job that came into our shop this morning and the material is "Rol-Man" a type of Astroloy. The spec sheet states not to use twist drills as it will work harden the hole. Is there any way around this? I have seen many posts here with people struggling with exotic materials and seeing lots of answers to those questions. Can anybody help with an answer for me. What size are the holes?

you could use solid carbide drills or insert drills depending on the hole size.

Or helix mill them.

Sorry, forgot to put that down, 3/8-16 by 1/2" deep thru hole. Thanks

Mill them and then threadmill them and done with it should be very little problems.

Thanks for your suggestions guys, we'll give it a go. if all else fails, we're gonna heat up the spot where the hole is to be and drill thru with a mason drill, dry. Thanks again for all the suggestions.

You could try straight-flute carbide drills.

I would be very careful about heating the material. If you cahnge the properties of the material you could be opening yourself up for trouble/liability issues is the part fails, I wouled check with the customer before heating it.
