end mills for shrink fit holders?

We use Robb Jakk and Kennametal Solid carbide e.m.'s in our shrink fit holders. They work just fine. I cut alot of titanium and the tool life is unbelievable. Just don't try and use HSS e.m.'s in your shrink fits. They are a bitch to get out if you are lucky enough to get one out! I found a few holders laying around here that are basically useless now until someone decides to get out the torch and some dry ice. The HSS and the holders have basically the same expansion and contraction rate. rolleyes.gif

I've had tools pull out from both hydraulic holders and shrink fit holders......YES watch for tolerances.......Cut a part in Korea on a 7 axis spar mill that was 40 feet long......after the cut I had four parts instead of two.....Both spindles had .750 solid carbide end mills and the tools pulled out about .300. Not fun trying to explain that to HYSA. (Hyundai Space and Aircraft) A year and a half after I left and Boeing had problems with HYSA

I wonder if it was the holders.....Prolly NOT!!!!

I thought I had one pull out once but it was my lack of patience to wait for the holder to cool down all the way before I re mounted it to the cat 40 part of the holder. Put them together hot and they cool down in the spindle and come loose. Now I dip them in the warm waterjet tank and cool them slow then blow air on them to cool to room temp. The fan on the shrink fit unit just takes too long to cool them down. I did notice that they do start to lose their integrity after being heated up so many times. I have a few that I just cant get e.m's into anymore. Thinking about honing them open maybe a few tenths to see if I can use them again.
