Creating a line perpendicular to a surface

Does anyone have an efficient way to make a line perpendicular to a surface? I need to drill holes that are "normal" to a surface ...

Create a wcs to the surface normal or surface geometery, while in that

wcs draw a line using points x0y0z0 and x0y0z1 or

draw a point at x0y0z0, for starters.

Xform, project....select your points, then surfaces, then turn on lines-point option box, and it will add the line length and point normal to the surface / face. Works well for point / vector 5 axis drilling.

I have always done it like Rickster ... but NO LONGER ... thanks Verndog ... so much easier, quicker and safe ...

even easier, use Create Point- Dynamic. Click on your surface, hit the "L" key, put line length in the box in the ribbon bar that shows 2 parallel lines, and boom, line perp to surface or other entity.

Easier still use Verisurfs Dynamic surface point Cad check box .. select point... done.

Problem with that is dynamic is basically "sketch mode" and doesn't allow an exact point to input like project will. I use that when close is good enough..ie evaluating part.

 

If you ever get a model file with points (pilot locations) only on a 5 ax part the project works awesome for drilling.

Dont feel bad...that option used to be under create point, surface project (to create a line LOL)...and even less people found it there. This is the improved place to create a line normal.

This is NOT entirely true ... yes, it is in sketch mode, but when dragging arrow to a point on the surface and the arrow will snap to that exact point ...

 

Both method works great ... but could not get Verisurf to work ... this is what I tried (maybe wrong) ...

 

Verisurf main menu ==> Verisurf Surface Points ==> Dynamic Surface Points

 

And nothing ... doesn't allow me to pick anything and no dialog box comes up ...

Looks like your right about that, it will snap to an actual point, pretty sure it didn't used to when I first went looking for line / normal some years back. Just goes to show...you have to try something different when you get fed up things are taking to long the old way.

Verisurf works great here.. sometimes it takes a few seconds for the dialog to appear.

Make sure your construction mode is "3D" on your status bar at the bottom of the screen if you don't want to spend 1/2 hr. figuring out why creat-point-dynamic works for everyone BUT you.
