wire edm tool path

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on a wire path issue I have encountered? I am using MCX3 mill level 3; Wire level 2; Solids. I have a Mitsubishi FX20 WEDM. How do I cut a die opening in a detail that has a contour on the surface of the part and keep a constant land around the cutting edge? I generally leave about ¼ to 3/8 land and taper the relief .5 degrees. Thanks in advance for your input.

rdavidson, i dont think you can unless your wire edm allows for 3d traking. mastercam will do this but unless your z on your edm can move along with your other axis i dont think you can.my fanucs will not do that.look in 4 axis parameter page and look at the definition of 3-d traking. hth another option is to change your relief angles around your contour to get it closer to a constant land.it may be possible to project that surface contour to a desired land amount and then do a 4 axis wirepath.even that will change your angles and you probably need to sync it by branch points.

You will have to change your geometry to get a constant land around the cutting edge when you have a contour like that.

I cut a round part that had a step with a radius that was right in the middle of a wired slot with clearance taper with land on top. I had to back off/make smaller my profile geometry untill I was getting a land in the radius area... Its not easy and it will take some practice cuts to get right.
