5 axis router

Our company machines composites, we are considering buying a 5 axis router. We are considering the type with an articulated head.

Question to you guys,

who uses a cnc router?

what brands do you know of?

Onsrudd is one model we have been looking at.

 

Sugestions?

We've been running an Onsrud 5 axis machine for 4 years. It's been a good machine.

 

We looked at several other manufacturers before buying the Onsrud, and felt that Onsrud gave us more bang for our bucks.

How is the control and customer support?

I can't compare the Osai control to others; it's the only one I've used extensively, although I did briefly work with a Haas control when taking some classes at the local CC. As you probably already know, the Osai control is a touch screen system.

 

I haven't used their support a lot, but it is good during normal business hours. After normal business hours, they have a monitored answering system; you leave a message and the on-call tech calls you back. We're a one shift operation, so I've never tried the after hours tech support.

 

If the machine is connected to the internet. Onsrud tech support can log onto the machine and troubleshoot if you have issues.

 

Onsrud provided the post when we bought the machine in 2006.

Onsrud and Thermwood are both brands that I would consider. However you may also want to look into Robotics as well.

if i were still in a shop environment and looking at routers, i would definitely be looking into robots.

we have a 5 axis Onsrud also with a 60 x 96 bed and have been very happy with it. the control is user friendly and support has been excellent. MasterCam post was provided with the machine.

I have a DMS 5 axis router that has been pretty reliable. They are in Colorado Springs.

Infinite C Axis is a nice feature to have.

I would look into robotic waterjet for composites as well if you're just cutting

(with a drilling head for small holes)

 

robots are extremely flexible and practically maintenance free,

 

the cons being they're a pain to program for small batches (robotmaster helps), and their accuracy isn't fantastic.

Have used a Thermwood in the past, the biggest POS I have ever used, no rigidity whatsoever.

Try looking at a 5 axis DMS they make a great machine that has a Fa gor controller. I programmed and ran FA on one for two years and it never let me down.

We have a CR Onsrud 5 Axis Twin Table machine. We are happy with it. Support is very good. Their implementation of the TCP functions on the OSAI control can simplify your programming.If you choose to look further you might consider looking at:

We use Quintax 5-axis routers here and they've done everything we've needed.

We use usualy MAKA maschines 5 axis works on us very well.

I sure miss the DMS, way better than the Thermwood I'm stuck with now. Just to be fair the Therm is older and been rode hard without any major problems, you just have to work around it's lack of rigidity.

 

We ran the DMS 24/5 for 70k cycles without a hicup. Oh Yeah! like Colin said push for the continuous C axis. Another thing I would suggest is to budget in a rock solid post.
